The Second Address

Amazon

The Reason to Return, Volume 11: The Second Address, the Amazon opportunity

A son three states away sends groceries and a sweater to his mother. The delivery notification arrives with a photo of the porch he grew up on. He knows the box landed. The moment ends before the reason he placed the order is complete: he was trying to take care of her from far away.

Amazon closes the logistics loop very well. The opportunity I see is that the human loop may still be open after the delivery notification arrives.

Under the delivery confirmation, offer three ready-to-send messages: "Did the sweater fit?" "What did you think of the pears?" "Call me when you open it." One tap turns a delivery notification into the conversation the order was meant to create. Amazon builds the stage and then gets out of the way.

The feeling is closeness. The son was not really buying a sweater. He was trying to be present and connect from three states away.

An account that helps one person care for two households could become valuable for more than speed and selection. It may also become part of how the family stays connected.

People search whether Amazon tells a recipient who sent a gift because the real question is relational: will the person receiving this understand who is thinking about them? The Second Address helps close that human loop and gives customers another reason to send gifts through Amazon.

Amazon has spent years getting very good at moving objects from one address to another. The next opportunity may be helping the meaning behind the object travel the final distance.

The product is not always the end of the customer journey. Sometimes the real value begins between people after the product arrives.

What does your product make possible between people after it is delivered, and do you help with that part?

Reach out to your team that owns your post-purchase experience. Ask what human moment your confirmation screen could start instead of simply ending the transaction.
