Your Name in Lights

McDonald's

The Reason to Return, Volume 6: Your Name in Lights, the McDonald's opportunity

A six-dollar Happy Meal could create a customer for the next thirty years. And the technology to do it is already hanging above the counter.

Imagine a mom walks into McDonald’s with her six-year-old on a Tuesday. There is no birthday party. It isn’t in the budget. She orders his Happy Meal and quietly tells the crew member, “It’s his birthday today.”

Today, the crew member can smile and say happy birthday. What if they could do three words more?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARCUS.

Not on a receipt. On the giant digital menu board above the counter.

The screens are already there. They change with the daypart, the weather and what’s being promoted. The technology isn’t the opportunity. The human moment is.

The crew member comes around the counter, walks Marcus out front and points up. “Look. That’s you.” For thirty seconds, a six-year-old is the biggest thing in the building. And a parent who couldn’t afford a birthday party just watched her child get one anyway.

The feeling is significance.

Now watch what happens next. Mom’s phone comes out. Maybe Dad’s does too. The picture gets sent to grandparents, cousins and friends. But the real return isn’t the photo. It’s the memory.

A child’s birthday memory can influence where that family chooses to eat for years. Three words turned a transaction into a story the family gets to keep.

McDonald’s once famously counted the billions it had served. Imagine the next chapter: Billions and Billions Celebrated.

That’s the hidden opportunity. No new restaurant. No new app. No new loyalty program. No discount. Just using something the business already owns to make one customer feel significant.

So here is the question I would ask every leadership team: What are your three words? What tiny action could your team take, using something you already have, that makes a customer feel bigger than the transaction?

You may already own the stage. Someone just needs permission to use it.
